I love manual, but the auto is objectively better in most off-road cases. It also allows you to be smoother and avoid drivetrain shock in tough situations.

I think for a single winch, you could rig some sort of post-mounted pulley to flip down and push the cable below running gear, mufflers and stuff.

It actually depends on the vehicle power train and gearing. My Jeep YJ and TJ are totally different off-road both are good but due to different powertrains the YJ needs 4 low most often and the Rubicon in almost never in 4 low.

I have a question : How can I safely negotiate an extremely steep decline using a manual 4x4 vehicle while off-roading? The slope is so steep that if I take my foot off the brake, the car will roll downhill very quickly. I need to use the brake and clutch to prevent the engine from stalling, but this puts a lot of strain on the brakes and hubs and doesn't allow enough oil pumping. Should I use a heel-toe downshifting technique or blip the accelerator to manage this situation effectively without fully relying on the brakes? How can I best use first gear to control the descent without stalling the engine?

Wet (lubricated) torque= subtract 10% from the dry torque spec, and set your torque wrench to the new lower value. If no torque wrench is available, tighten it until it just gets loose again, then back it off ½ a turn.

Glad you're bringing attention to this as this recovery was amateurish, which is surprising considering almost everyone here would be a local so you'd think would have some idea as to what they're doing here. In addition to everything you said - those 2 people standing where they were @ 2:00. The person in the water just not even looking for crocs, but both of them standing in the potential reach of that rope snapping and hitting one of them. I've seen ropes and chains snap and shoot off in surprising directions. Also the person standing on the backhoe's/trackor's bucket - if a chain snaps and hits you it'll knock your jaw or a limb clean off. No exaggeration. It looks like they waited a while for that backhoe to come out, as the current had changed drastically since the car was first stuck, so perhaps I can understand them attempting the recovery with that other car, but even still waiting some hours for a suitable recovery vehicle is well worth it - that water is high enough for a small or medium croc to sneak up. It may not bring you down but will rip up your calf pretty bad.

Gona cop hate as im only 40sec in and ill fix at the end but from what ive seen and heard already im going to say your type of 4x4ing will be different to someone else's doesn't mean your right or wrong and doesn't mean there's is right or wrong being into 4x4ing is like being into cars some like racing some like rallying some like showing off some like drag racing and so on and so on, 4x4ing has many different aspects aswell so because you like and do things 1 way and someone else did it another doesn't mean you get to say its not 4x4ing its like telling a rally car racer its not proper racing just because you race on road surfaces. You also have to take into account the experience levels of the driver you may have done this in a swb vehicle and this is a lwb but what was your experience level at that time, it could have been less then 6 months for this guy and he might not have mentors teaching him so hes now learning the hard way

Hi all, According to DIN and IS standards, springs made from wire or rod with a diameter above 16 mm should be hot coiled due to specific reasons. We have consulted with several manufacturers who claim they can cold coil springs using wire or rod up to 30 mm in diameter. Could you please advise if springs made from wire with a diameter ranging from 16 mm to 30 mm using the cold coiling process would be as effective as those made using the hot coiling process? I look forward to your valuable suggestions. Best regards, Johny

I'm an old guy and I've always thought of straps as "Tow Straps", never for tanking a speed run and hitting the strap with tons of force. You ease into the pull slowly, never shock load them. So I do have them but I use them on trees as anchor straps (Tree Saver), or as an extension to a winch line.

Don’t listen to this man. Factor 55 is four miles from where I am now. The extreme duty shackle doesn’t spin freely on the retention pulley effectively increasing the load. The standard shackle is “self” lubricating and is designed to work with the pulley. A soft shackle works because it’s under a load and in a dynamic pull recovery by definition has slack in it and if a soft shackle could ever come undone it would be when it is slack.

Your comments about the fatigue are well thought. It's very easy to get tunnel vision and make hasty moves when really the best thing is to focus on reality: it's not your car. It's not an emergency. The car is already ripped up. Hard to toss in the towel for the night, but oftentimes it's best just to stop and pick up in the morning when you get late into the night.
